General Project Order of Operations

Tile, Backsplash, Flooring, Etc.

*this list is a general rule of thumb

In general, we like as many things to be completed prior to cabinet painting/installation as possible. However, depending on what we are doing, the order of operations may be impacted.

1. Wall and ceiling drywall work

Should always be done prior to cabinets and flooring.

2. Wall and ceiling painting

We recommend this be completed before cabinets.

3. Flooring

We generally suggest before, however:

a. If we are painting/refacing it can be done before or after.

b. If we are adding/removing lower cabinets, flooring can still be done before or after. We suggest before.

c. For floating floors & vinyl flooring you need to check with your installer. Some flooring CAN NOT run under cabinets in which case it would have to be done after install.

d. If we are replacing or changing the "footprint" of an island or some lower cabinets sometimes it may make sense for us to partially demo, let your floors be done and then proceed with cabinet install.

4. Countertops

We generally suggest before, however:

a. If we are painting/refacing counters ca be done before rather than after.

b. If we are changing the lower footprint of cabinetry, templating will not be able to be done until after the lower cabinets are fully installed.

  • Exceptions are sometimes made for islands, as they can often work from our drawings.

c. A plumber usually needs to be hired to connect a new sink after countertop installation is complete. This should be discussed with the counter company.

5. Backsplash installation

Installation of backsplash is always after counter installation. If you are replacing an existing backsplash, we recommend removal of existing backsplash prior to cabinet painting or installation.

6. Cabinet painting and door installation
7. Plumbing and electrical

Depending on what your are having done you may need to have some work done before or after our project. You will need to discuss timing with your contractor.
